Can You Spot the Real Image from the AI-Generated One? JungleVision AI's Imagen 3 Challenge

Date:

In May of 2024, Member Jungle launched our inbuilt AI image generator, which allows you to make stunning AI-powered images directly from your club’s website. This allows you to quickly and easily generate beautiful AI images and add them directly to your club’s blogs, newsletters, events, pages and more.

JungleVision AI has officially switched from using the Imagen 2 engine to the much more powerful Imagen 3. To celebrate this, I thought I’d show off some of the most incredible, most beautiful and funniest images that have been made with JungleVision AI in the last few months. Plus, I’ve put together a little test to see if you can tell which images are AI and which are real.

As you may or may not know, all Member Jungle customers get their first 50 generation credits for free. So after you read this, you can go have a play and see what you can make for your club for free.

AI Images Are Getting Scary Good

Firstly, I will start this article in the traditional way. If you’ve read my other articles on AI, you will know that I have been using the same very simple prompt to generate an image to show how fast AI is progressing. That prompt is “an Instagram ad, with a slogan for a car club”.

So, without further ado, here are the latest results.

AI Car

That’s right, it is now actually capable of writing!

Here it is in sequence.

AI car images

Here it is compared to the very first one I did.

There are 14 months between these two images. It’s gone from a roughly car-shaped blob with nonsense writing to a glossy photo-realistic Lamborghini with actual writing. Admittedly, it’s not a particular Lamborghini; it's more of a fusion between a Huracan and a Revuelto. At least, that’s what my in-house Lamborghini expert said, which is what I’ve started calling my little brother.

Even compared to the BMW photo from May, it’s a lot better.

The Lambo is perfect. There are no strange angles or weird, disjointed bits up close. Besides the model thing, there’s no way to tell it’s not a real photograph. The same can’t be said for the BMW, which has several odd artifacts and inconsistencies, like the mirrors, front sensors, badge, and bonnet.

The point is that AI-generated images are getting really, really good.

AI vs Reality: Can You Tell Which of These 7 Photos Are AI-Generated?

It's time to get into our AI versus real photos quiz. The way this will work is I will show a set of photos: one real, one AI-generated, and each labelled A or B. You just need to guess which is which, and all the answers will be at the end of this section.

How did you go? Feeling confident? Could you tell right away, or did you have to really examine every little detail?

Well, either way, let’s get to the results. The AI-generated images are as follows:

  1. A
  2. A
  3. B
  4. A
  5. B
  6. A
  7. B

How many did you get right? Personally, if I had been doing this quiz, I'd have barely scraped a passing grade.

If you're hesitant to use AI-generated images in your club's communications because you're worried they will look odd or uncanny valley, keep two things in mind. First, your members won't carefully examine every detail of the photos you use in your newsletter, event headers, and web pages. As long as they pass the first-glance test, your members will never look close enough to determine whether they are AI-generated. Secondly, there is nothing wrong with using AI images for club communications. Plus, I think we can all agree that these don't look uncanny valley.

Also, top tip when trying to generate images that look like the ones above; start your prompt with the phrase "4k photorealistic image of…". This will help the AI understand the kind of images you are after.

The Most Incredible Images Created With JungleVision AI So Far

So, let’s shift to some of the most incredible jaw-dropping images created with JungleVision AI this year. It’s also worth remembering that the vast majority of these were created with the old Imagen 2 engine, so the quality of the images coming out of JungleVision will only increase in the future.

Let’s start things off with this adorable puppy having a swim. I love the detail in the fur and water ripples. I can barely believe that this is AI-generated.

Next, check out this awesome, long-exposure photo of cars on a highway. I think it’s really cool how well it copies a pretty abstract photography technique while still looking realistic.

The next one is a mirror image. JungleVision was asked to create a photorealistic hummingbird feeding from a flower on the left and then mirror that on the right, but in origami style.

Here is another photorealistic one of Sydney Harbour. This one is so good, I can nearly spot my office building from my previous job.

Next, here’s the most adorable Amigurumi tiger cub I’ve ever seen. I can neither confirm nor deny whether I cried a little the first time I saw this, it’s that cute.

Then there’s this elderly lady supporting her favourite sports team. I love the focus changes in this; I think they help it look extra realistic. The fact that her hands are slightly out of focus and the people behind her are completely out of focus gives this picture an awesome depth and realism.

There’s this beautiful abstract painting of a woman’s face.

Finally, we have my personal favourite, this stunning watercolour rat having a cigarette, or Dart Rat as I affectionately call it.

The Funniest Images Created With JungleVision AI So Far

Half the fun of AI-generated images is mucking around and seeing what odd, hilarious things you can get the generator to kick out. Here, then, are some of the strangest, funniest and creepiest images JungleVision AI has made since its launch.

Our first one is of a man (who I think looks a bit like Jason Isaacs) with a giant head sitting by an ocean pool.

Next is a bottle of hot sauce that the AI has interpreted as a bottle of sauce that is hot and sweaty. Either way, it’s great.

Next, we have a spooky old ghost lady. Which has awesome campy horror vibes that I’m obsessed with. You best believe I’m going to have a lot of fun with JungleVision in the lead-up to Halloween this year.

Next, we have the answer to the question: What if we remade the John Wick movies starring the Member Jungle Tiger?

Next, we have a few spooky ones in a row, as AI does an awesome job creating huge eldritch monsters, and I couldn’t pick my favourite.

Finally, we have the spookiest one of them all, so brace yourself for Elmo with teeth.

With teeth like that, Rocko better look out. There you go, a “joke” for the Sesame Street fans out there.

So when generating an image, there are lots of filters a generated image needs to get through before you can see it. Part of this is called a sanity check to ensure that the image makes sense and isn't just a random assortment of digital nonsense. So, as part of running JungleVision AI, our team has to test the system to ensure it works properly. I will show you an image from a prompt designed to fail a sanity check; usually, you wouldn't be able to see this, but the team can see failed generations in testing. All this is to explain why we have created this; I promise we haven't lost our minds.

Shrek and Donkey

Besides the obvious, that is really realistic, Shrek and Donkey.

Finally, we arrive at the ultimate image in both meanings of the word. This is not just the ultimate image in this article but of human culture. Every piece of art, every cave painting, every Vitruvian Man, every Per Capita, every The Starry Night, and every Girl with a Pearl Earring has been leading up to this. This makes my favourite artist's work look like the scribblings of an imbecile. That's right, I'm taking the Goya prints off the wall and replacing them with this.

I know you think I'm overhyping this, but I'm not; I'm underselling it. Every moment since some over-ambitious fish dragged itself up onto the mud 375 million years ago has been leading up to this.
