ChatGPT vs Google Gemini: Which Should You Use For Your Club?

Date:

Ali vs. Frazier, Ward vs. Gatti, Taylor vs. Serrano, Ali vs. Foreman, Hagler vs. Hearns, Robinson vs. LaMotta, Tyson vs. Lewis, Alvarez vs. Golovkin. History is full of massive super fights that not only saw the best of the best face off against one another but did so in explosive, never-to-be-forgotten fashion.

Well, we have another all-timer for you here today: ChatGPT v Gemini, a battle for supremacy between today’s heavyweights of AI generators. Who will have their hand raised, and who will declare No Mas? Let’s find out.

Okay, okay, so I admit that was a pretty overdramatic intro, but I don’t get the opportunity to talk about boxing much, and it was fun, so…

The point is that today, I will examine both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini to see which is the better AI generator and which would be best to use for your club.

In the past, I have talked at length about why you should be using AI to help create content for your club and generally make running it easier. I will be the first to admit that up to this point, I have been using the free version of ChatGPT and loving it. Still, I have heard some really good things about Gemini and am more than willing to switch up if it means moving to a better system. So today, let’s investigate which is really the best to use for your club.

If you haven't already read my articles on AI, please read How to Use AI To Generate Content For Your Club’s Website for some context.

Before we get into it, to continue our boxing theme, I challenged both ChatGPT and Gemini to develop a name for a legendary boxing match, like Rumble in the Jungle or The Brawl in Montreal, but for a fight between them.

I got them to give me five options each, and they both did very well. Both suggested some very good ones, and they also both suggested the name Clash of the Titans. However, my personal favourites came down to The Battle of the Bots and The Code War. So, by a split decision, I give you your winner, The Code War.

That was Gemini, who came up with Code War, and GPT, who had The Battle of the Bots.

ChatGPT Or Google Gemini: Which Is Most Affordable For Your Club?

Round one is a classic: a breakdown of prices. Now, ChatGPT and Gemini both have free and paid versions. The free versions are quite generous and have many features, while the paid versions unlock a few extra bells and whistles that can be very useful for your club. You would probably be fine starting off with either system’s free version, but once you start using it more and more, upgrading to the paid version will likely be more than worth it.

ChatGPT’s paid version, ChatGPT Plus, is USD 20 per month, and Gemini’s paid version, Gemini Advanced, is AUD 32.99 monthly. Obviously, the price changes slightly with exchange rates, but that is about USD 20 a month. As of writing, Gemini is offering the first two months of Gemini Advanced for free; however, there is no indication of how long this offer will last. So, on the price alone, there isn’t much to separate them.

However, when I got down to the nitty-gritty and really pulled things apart, the only difference I could find was that Gemini is slightly cheaper if you pay annually rather than monthly.

ChatGPT Pricing Breakdown

ChatGPT currently has three AI models, each more powerful than the last: ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4 and ChatGPT 4.0. ChatGPT free gives you access to ChatGPT 3.5 and limited access to the more powerful ChatGPT 4.0. ChatGPT Plus gives you access to ChatGPT 4 and five times as many messages with 4.0 and access to DALL-E, the image generator. It comes with a few more advanced features, like custom chatbots and data analysis, but that’s a conversation for a different day.

Gemini Pricing Breakdown

Gemini currently has two AI models, Gemini 1.0 and Gemini 1.5. The free Gemini gives you access to 1.0, Gemini’s image generator and limited integration with Google apps. Gemini Advanced has access to 1.5 more extensive integrations with Google Docs, Gmail and more, plus 2TB of Google One storage. Again, there are more advanced features, but we need not worry about them here.

So, everything is pretty even at the end of round one, but I think access to an image generator as part of the free version, plus some cool integrations in the paid version, sees Gemini edge that round.

ChatGPT Pricing Breakdown

Am I taking the boxing metaphor a little too far here? I’m going to say no. As silly as making a scorecard is, it will genuinely help us keep track of how these systems compare to one another. Yes, I have replaced the Point Deduct section with a Question section because that seems more useful here; I doubt we will need to deduct points for shots after the bell or below the belt here.

ChatGPT Or Google Gemini: Which Has The More Context Tokens?

Okay, so if you have no idea what I mean by context tokens, don’t stress. Basically, context tokens are how we measure how much information an AI can remember. The more tokens, the more pieces of information an AI can remember.

This is important because if you have few context tokens, you will be limited in the size of documents and text you can feed into and get out of your AI. This will also limit how much the AI can remember what you have talked about. In real terms, this can be the difference between your AI generator remembering the name and field of your club each time you need something and you having to remind it each time or every few times. It’s not the end of the world, but the more context tokens, the more powerful and convenient an AI is.

So, let’s see how our competitors do on context tokens.

How Many Context Tokens Does ChatGPT Give You?

As of this writing, the free version of ChatGPT gives you access to just over 4,000 context tokens with ChatGPT 3.5 and just over 8,000 with limited access to ChatGPT 4.0. The paid version of ChatGPT gives access to 32,000 context tokens via 4.0. You can also get ChatGPT 4 Turbo, which is a model with extended context tokens that will boost you up to 128,000 tokens.

How Many Context Tokens Does Gemini Give You?

As of writing, Gemini free offers 32,000 context tokens with its 1.0 engine. Gemini Advanced gives you access to one million context tokens with its 1.5 engine.

That round seems a little less close, with Gemini’s free version offering more tokens than ChatGPT’s paid version. And Gemini’s paid version offering over 800,000 more tokens than ChatGPT 4 Turbo.

Is ChatGPT Or Google Gemini Easier To Use For Your Club?

Both ChatGPT and Gemini are incredibly easy to use and incredibly similar to use. Check out the screenshots of them below.

Seriously, look at these two. They are basically the same. They both have a menu on the left, a chat bar at the bottom, and a series of four suggested searches in the middle.

Both allow searching in natural language, meaning that you can ask questions and request information from them as if you were talking to another person. For example, I asked ChatGPT and Gemini the question below, and I also just searched using a standard internet browser.

“Hey, who is the boxer with the longest winning streak in the professional era?”

The internet browser gave me a bunch of results for lists of the highest winning streaks of all time, lists of the highest current winning streaks, and a whole bunch more. Both ChatGPT and Gemini gave me the same answer, using simple conversational language and even including some extra information.

This was ChatGPT’s answer; Gemini’s was worded differently but was just as good.

“The boxer with the longest winning streak in the professional era is Julio César Chávez of Mexico. He amassed an incredible 87 consecutive victories from his professional debut in 1980 until his first draw in 1993. This streak is widely considered one of the most remarkable in boxing history.”

Both systems also have built-in templates that make refining the exact kind of content you want to generate a lot easier and more reliable. Both systems allow you to have multiple chat windows with the AI.

These chats are saved in date order and can be referred to months later. It is invaluable to have previous AI chats and answers that will still be available months later. On multiple occasions, I refer back to old chats for context. Also, having the ability to have multiple chats means that you can separate your chats by topic. For instance, you could have one for help with club emails, one for help with ideas, another for general queries, and so on. This makes using AI for multiple things easier.

So, as controversial as it is, this round is going to have to go down as a tie. I could not find a single thing to separate ChatGPT and Gemini on ease of use.

ChatGPT Vs Google Gemini: Which Generates The Best Content?

Here we are, folks, the big one, the round we have all been waiting for. Who generates the best content? I will give both systems the same prompts and share the results here so that you can judge which one is best. I will also post both results below without indicating which is which so you can judge unbiasedly. Later on, I will also include the respective answers.

First, I wanted to come up with a name for a book club, so I gave the prompt “quirky book club name ideas,”. It’s very short and simple, and the results are below.

ChatGPT Vs Google Gemini: Which Generates The Best Content?

Now, personally, I think one of these responses is much better than the other. It gives a lot more information and tips on how to name a book club well than the other does, and it is laid out nicely. So, to me, number two is the winner here, but I will say that number one’s suggestion of the Spine Crackers Society is great.

Know which one you prefer? Locked in? Okay, so number one is ChatGPT, and number two is Gemini.

Using ChatGPT & Google Gemini To Draft Club Emails

Next, let’s see which does the better job of drafting an email for our fictional book club.

Below is the prompt I gave to both systems. It includes plenty of information and instructions on the style to write in, so let’s see how they do.

“Please write me a short email to the members of my book club Spine Crackers Society, that includes the following information:

  • Book club starts at 7pm on Thursday the 8th
  • The book we are discussing is A Head Full Of Ghosts by Paul Trembly
  • Please remind them to read it before arriving
  • Book club will run for two hours
  • Some snacks will be provided, but it is byo alcohol
  • It is held at the clubhouse (give a fake address for the purposes of this email)
  • Be funny and quirky
  • Reference both A Head Full Of Ghosts by Paul Trembly and other literature where suitable”

Below are the results

Okay, so both of these would make great drafts for club emails that, with a little tweaking, could make absolutely fantastic event emails for your club. So how do we decide the winner? First, let’s talk about the references; one has made several slightly odd references. Edgar Allan Poe and Shirley Jackson are gothic and horror fiction legends, so mentioning them in this email makes sense. However, the references themselves don’t necessarily make sense; in my opinion, they feel more crowbarred in. Also, I’ve never read Catcher In The Rye, but does Holden Caulfield often forget to read books? Genuine question.

The other email made one perfectly fine reference to The Great Gatsby. It’s not the most fitting book to reference, but it makes more sense than the references made in the other email.

Overall, I personally feel like number two is trying too hard to be funny and overshoots the mark. In real life, I would simply ask it to tone it back a bit, drop the references, and get it to generate it again. This should fix it. However, for the purposes of this test, I have to give it to Number one.

Got your answer? Well, our winner, number one, is ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Vs Google Gemini: Which Is Better To Help Plan Club Events?

Finally, let’s mix it up and see which is best for helping your club plan an event. For this, I will pretend to be running a bushwalking/hiking club and ask the AI to make me a checklist of things I need to organise for our upcoming hike. I expect both of these to need a fair bit of editing, but AI is great at helping come up with ideas and talk things out. Let’s see how they do.

“Hey I run a Bushwalking/hiking club and I am planning on hosting an overnight hike in a few weeks. Can you please give me a short checklist of some of the things I will need to consider and plan for as I plan out this event and invite my club’s members? Thanks!”

Again, that’s pretty basic. I haven't really given too many details, and obviously, the more details you put in, the better the results will be, but let's see how they go.

These are both awesome. They both cover a whole lot of detail on what to do during planning, during the hike and even after the hike. I’ve never planned a hike for a group of people before, but in my non-professional opinion, they have done a great job of raising many of the concerns and considerations you'd have to make in order to run an event like this.

Now, it looks a little odd in my copied and pasted version, but number two included a link to a hike-planning article on the National Parks Service website. Now, this is American, but I never told it I wasn’t in America, so I can't blame it for that.

Copied and Pasted Version of AI generated for events planning

I am going to have to say that number two is better. I think its information is a little more succinct and easier to understand, and I love that it gave me a link to an outside source so I could continue my research. So, yeah, I'm giving it to number two.

Do you have your answer? Number Two was Gemini.

As far as who generates the best content, that is two points to one in favour of Gemini. So this round goes to Gemini.

ChatGPT and Gemini comparison

Am I the only one who found the boxing scorecard genuinely helpful in this breakdown? I think I might have to keep using a similar format for all my future comparisons because this makes it really easy for me to track and understand how they compare.

ChatGPT & Google Gemini Comparison

Google Gemini. In my opinion, and based on the experiments we’ve done here today, Google Gemini is the slightly better option for your club. Let’s be real: Both systems are great and will only get better as time goes on. However, as things stand today, Gemini is the best AI generator to use for your club.

ChatGPT & Google Gemini Comparison

As always, this space is moving so fast, and I’ll probably be back testing AI systems before you know it. I think Apple is working on one, so we’ll probably have to see how it stacks up to the current champ when it finally lands.
